Red River Valley Co-op Power linemen conduct high voltage safety demonstrations for various youth groups.

Electric power enriches our lives nearly every minute of the day and is the safest form of energy. If it is not used properly, however, there is the potential for injury, death and property loss. The high voltage demonstration dramatically shows what happens when contact is made with a high voltage line.

Highlights of the demonstration include drawing an arc with a hot stick from a 7,200 volt power line and exploding a hot dog (representing the heart) on a dummy with 7,200 volts of electricity.

The program is designed to give students a better understanding of electrical power distribution systems and electrical safety.

Member Service representatives also give low voltage safety demonstrations at local grade schools.
